Company Timeline

Columbia Sportswear was founded by Gert Boyle in 1938, beginning as a small hat company called the Columbia Hat Company. Gert’s parents fled Nazi Germany in 1937 and settled in Portland, Oregon, where they started the business. Over time, Columbia evolved into a sportswear company, overcoming financial challenges and near-bankruptcy in the late 1960s under Gert and Tim Boyle's leadership.

By 1983, Gert became the chairman of the board, a role she held until her passing in 2019. Today, Columbia Sportswear operates in over 72 countries and collaborates with more than 13,000 retailers globally. The company’s flagship store is located in Portland, Oregon.
