The History of AsicsAlright, let's dial back the whimsy and dive into the riveting tale of Asics Ltd. Imagine the scene, it's September 1, 1949, and nestled in Kobe, Japan's Hyogo Prefecture, is one determined individual named Kihachiro Onitsuka. In the modest confines of his home, a footwear revolution was just beginning to lace up. |
His brainchild, Onitsuka Co., rose to prominence with its innovative approach to basketball shoes. But ambition knew no bounds for Onitsuka, and soon, his company was producing shoes that carried athletes to podiums in the Olympics. Their Mexico 66 design, with its distinctive crossed stripes, was the toast of the town. A new chapter unfolded in 1977 when Onitsuka Tiger found kindred spirits in GTO and JELENK, leading to the formation of the Asics Corporation. Although the name changed, the legacy of Onitsuka Tiger continued to be honoured in a vintage range of Asics shoes. Asics wasn't just about maintaining pace, it was about setting the pace. The company grew exponentially, with its wings expanding into sportswear and a wide variety of sports shoes. By 2006, it had racked up an impressive 171 billion yen in net sales and 13 billion yen in net income. Fast forward to 2011, the Australian Cricket Team couldn't help but be swept up by the Asics wave, announcing the brand as their new kit manufacturer, replacing Adidas. |
Asics' portfolio is as diverse as it is impressive, spanning running shoes, trail running shoes, waterproof trainers, and more. With the advent of their GEL styles like the Gel Kayano and Gel Nimbus, the company has become the go-to choice for fitness enthusiasts, athletes, and casual runners worldwide.
